Brook Hill 4-H Horse & Pony Club
4-H is the nation's largest youth development organization, with more than 6 million 4-H youth participating. The Virginia Cooperative Extension provides this educational youth development program to youth in Virginia. 4-H is rich with learning experiences where young people partner with caring adults and volunteers in a fellowship unlike any other program available to youth today. Through 4-H, young people are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that emphasize 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development.
In 2008 the United Neigh joined with the National and Virginia 4-H program and formed the Brook Hill Farm 4-H Horse and Pony Club. Standing for head, heart, hands, and health, 4-H uses more than a century of experience in youth development programming.
Head - Managing, Thinking
Heart - Relating, Caring
Hands - Giving, Working
Health - Being, Living
The emphasis of the horse and pony program is equine selection, nutrition, management, riding, recreation, fun, and horsemanship. It has been proven that participating in 4-H Horseback riding provides an outdoor sports fitness program for physical, personal, and emotional development, including confidence building. And most importantly, 4-H members pledge to build a better community, country, and world.
The 4-H program's positive effect on youth is directly in keeping with the goals of our United Neigh At-Risk Youth Program. The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, conducted by the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, shows youth engaged with 4-H activities are:
• Nearly two times more likely to get better grades in school;
• Nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college;
• 41 percent less likely to engage in risky behaviors; and
• 25 percent more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities.
Members have the opportunity to participate in:
• Monthly meetings where they learn about horses either through a presentation by another club member or through hands-on activities
• Do presentations themselves
• District horse knowledge competitions
• Field trips
• Service projects
• Club leadership
• District and state shows
Hippology is the Greek word meaning the study of the horse. 4-H offers an Equine Knowledge Contest that consists of four phases: Horse Judging, Written Examination and Slide Identification, ID Stations and Team Problem Solving. Hippology is also used in competition in a game entitled Horse Bowl. Horse Bowl is an educational project, in which 4-H'ers learn about the horse and how to work as a team member. Participants enhance their study skills by using selected reference materials. Topics include equine anatomy, conformation, feed and nutrition, evolution, breed characteristics, reproduction, horse management, way-of-going, tack and equipment, styles of riding and the exhibition of horses. In 2014, the Brook Hill 4-H Horse and Pony Club teams placed 2nd and 3rd in the region, and we had 6 of the top 10 individual placings.
Horsemanship Skills Program
The Virginia 4-H's Horsemanship Skills Program emphasizes safety in all equine activities, and aims to develop horsemanship skills and recognize individual achievement in a non-competitive, progressive program. As this program is further developed, additional levels and skill sets will be added. Beginning in 2013, 4-H'ers in Virginia who have not previously shown at the state level with their current project horse will be required to complete Horsemanship Skill Levels 1 & 2 in order to be eligible for the 4-H y Show held in September in Lexington, VA. For more information on the Horsemanship Skills Program please click here.
Each year the 4-H holds its annual state show at the Lexington Horse Center in September. Four United Neigh participants compete each year in Dressage and Hunger Pleasure classes, as well as are judged for horse management. This 4 day event is a highlight for our United Neigh group!
The 4-H Pledge
I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service, and
my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country, and my world.
